Litany of Repentance

Opening Litany

Holy and Loving God, you gave us the earth to share with the other creatures, but we thought to take your place

Holy and immortal One, have mercy on us.

For our violence against the earth and our passive complicity in corporate greed and corruption,

Holy and immortal One, have mercy on us.

For the ways in which we have allowed the love of Jesus to be corrupted and bent to serve false gods,

Holy and immortal One, have mercy on us.

For the church’s treatment of First Nations, for our blindness and deafness to their suffering,

Holy and immortal One, have mercy on us.

For the church’s inability to recognize our common humanity, beyond race, beyond gender, beyond culture,

Holy and immortal One, have mercy on us.

And now in a world torn by violence, we cry out to you. Fill us with repentance and show us how to act with the boldness of your love; the cross our sign that transformation and a new life is possible for the contrite heart and the willing mind.

Holy and immortal One, have mercy on us.
