The name of this blog comes from the poetry of Canadian author, Di Brandt. “children like us” is published in the collection Agnes in the Sky: Poems by Di Brandt. It was published by Turnstone Press in 1990.
children like us
the exiled the disinherited
the ones with broken knees
children like us whose skin
is not not their own whose flesh
remembers the generations
& their tears who are filled
with the world’s longing &
call it love who bruise too
easily like fresh fruit the
gifted the innocent the broken
hearted who hear voices in
the trees who’ve seen the sky
become transparent at sunset
& know eternity in their bones
the beautiful the lost whose
cries keep the earth alive whose
flesh is like grass like flaming
the orphaned the poor in spirit
suffering earth’s children
